Who I am as a Developing Professional
As a new teacher, I endeavor to continually gain new perspectives and take away from my experiences in order to improve and grow as an educator. My desire to best serve my students and greater society drives this development. Having had many opportunities to be a leader of and within many teams, I strive to model strong and positive leadership. In this, my goal is provide my students with the skills and confidence to become leaders in their own right. I aim to improve and flesh out my teaching craft by using learnings from my own past experiences to refine my abilities as an educator. Preparing my students for their own futures and awareness of their influence on our world is of the utmost importance to me as a teacher. Finding opportunities to be a contributor to my school and community in all capacities is of the utmost importance to me as an educator. Staying open to the new perspectives I will gain as I develop as a teacher is key in my personal development.

What have I learned from the Field of Education so farSince I began in this program, my experiences and the perspectives that have been shared with me have helped my own perspectives and goals evolve, even in the short time I have been in the Education program at UBC. I have learned that my original teaching philosophy and initial drive to move into the field of education is well aligned to the goals of the new curriculum that I have the privilege to teach here in British Columbia. This alignment serves the students who are fortunate to be in a school system that perpetuates the ability for students to live their diverse and unique truths. This program has provided me the mindset and tools to support students in their own growth and personal endeavors. I have particularly learned that my own high school experience was entirely different and quite limited in comparison to the methodology and overall mindset of today's education system. This realization has helped expand my own boundaries and I have gained knowledge and skills to teach not only the prescribed curriculum, but also (most importantly in my opinion) the core competencies. Opportunities to overlap different subject areas in order to enrich learning and life skills for students have also been a very valuable in regards to new revelations to me. The science and awareness around mental health has also been a great boon in my personal development as a teacher as well. Overall, this program has essentially re-wired how I perceive the public education system and I have learned that the limitations that were present in my own public education have been reduced for the benefit of today's students!
